New Books to Entertain and Educate

Sometimes it seems so challenging to keep up to date with new titles which present the creation in an interesting fashion. This was not always the case. Thirty years ago, there were few such books. Read the rest of this entry »

Quality Programs for Free

Quality Programs for Free

Intermediate

There are some useful and visually attractive programs available on YouTube. For example, Privileged Species (previously reviewed in Dialogue) at 32 minutes, has already recorded 33,300 views. However for better quality display, a DVD is required which CSAA sells for $15.00 each.

Several years ago CSAA distributed free copies of the DVD Programming of Life which runs 44 minutes and is produced by LaBarge Media (with Don Johnson). We distributed this to high school and university students, teachers, and pastors. This program examines mathematical issues concerning the living cell. In this context, information is a critical feature of living cells. The kind of information required (proscriptive) involves instructions. From that discussion we proceed to protein manufacturing which is illustrated with beautiful graphics. We then learn the essential features of a computer and how the cell demonstrates these capacities. Read the rest of this entry »

Jerry Bergman. 2008. Slaughter of the Dissidents: the shocking truth about killing the careers of Darwin doubters. Leafcutter Press. pp. 477.

There are so many stories: school teachers who lost their jobs, students who did not receive their earned degrees, candidates who did not secure academic jobs, university faculty who lost their jobs or who were assigned to less meaningful work – all had one thing in common – their colleagues feared they might criticize Darwinism. The Big History Book

The Big History Book

Children

It went on and on. I kept pulling the panels out and there were more. This book is cool because it has real time lines. It goes from the creation in 4004 B.C. to 2001 when the iPod was invented (I’m not talking about the iPod Touch I mean the original iPod)! That is a lot of fast change!

The book tells us about the early people. We follow Bible history, world events, inventions/technology and civilizations/empires. We see what happened all at the same time. Stonehenge in England was built just after the flood. Most history books don’t tell us that. And it is funny to talk about, but sort of cool, that the yoyo was invented in 500 B.C. The More the Merrier

The More the Merrier

One of the great strengths of the intelligent design community, is the large variety of people from diverse scientific disciplines, who contribute to the discussion. With many minds and original approaches, the arguments are honed, and honed again. Everybody wins. In similar fashion, the appearance of a new creation based book with original arguments gives us occasion not only to cheer – but also to pay attention to its contents. Think Dinosaurs

Think Dinosaurs

Children

Few youngsters can resist the excitement of those scary, but mysterious creatures called dinosaurs. Naturally there are lots of books about dinosaurs. Most are written with a young audience in mind. Some, of course, are better than others. While most of the dinosaur books published today feature wonderful illustrations, many of these books unfortunately interpret these creatures in an evolutionary context. Still, there are a number of dinosaur titles which promote a young earth view. Read the rest of this entry »

Up to Date Foundations

Up to Date Foundations

Intermediate

One of the pleasures of staffing a book table are the conversations that happen with people looking at the resources. On many occasions, individuals have requested an introduction to creation. Before responding, I have often inquired what the person’s interests are. If the person is interested in physics and mathematics, or in apologetics, there might be little point in showing them a work on fossils, for example. In the 1970s and 1980s, there were general introductory books like Scientific Creationism and What is Creation Science? But that was then, and this is now. There are many areas of science that were not even contemplated then, but which we have to deal with today. The good news now is that some general introductory works have appeared which can be very helpful to many people seeking insights into the issues. Read the rest of this entry »

User Friendly Book on the Flood

User Friendly Book on the Flood

In many ways, the new book The Global Flood: Unlocking Earth’s Geologic History by John Morris, is a repackaging of Steven Austin’s (editor) book Grand Canyon: Monument to Catastrophe. However the new book is written in non-technical language, with many more illustrative maps, diagrams and charts as well as many beautiful photographs. Thus for many people, this new title will prove very useful and popular indeed. Read the rest of this entry »

We Don’t Need a Big Bang!

We Don’t Need a Big Bang!

Intermediate

Some people actually like numbers and mathematics, and some people don’t. Everybody knows that! Some people however sound positively lyrical on the subject of numbers. Dr. David Berlinsky, for example, in his book infinite ascent: a short history of mathematics (2005) describes the inexhaustible variety of natural numbers and their personalities. (Modern Library Paperback edition p. 5). He lists various demanding disciplines that mathematicians have developed. Beyond the practical and theoretical challenges that mathematics provides however are the insights into nature. As Dr. Kurt Wise pointed out in Faith, Form and Time (2002) “The universe seems to operate with mathematical precision, and natural laws have a mathematical form.” (p. 91)  Astronomer Dr. Timothy Ferris elaborates on  mathematics in his 1997 book The Whole Shebang: “[M]athematics [is] a codified form of logic that embodies the faith of science that nature works in a rational way.” He adds “Like all scientific theories, relativity is expressed in terms of mathematical equations-” Read the rest of this entry »

And the book is magnificent with beautiful illustrations from sites around the world. Also there are wonderful dinosaur reconstructions based on the latest scientific information.  Read the rest of this entry »
