Review of this Book

The Christian young person (grades 7 – 10) understands that humans are a separate creation, unique and made in the image of God. There are however lots of confusing issuessurrounding this topic. Dr. Brian Thomas’ new book examines this topic under the following themes: human origins according to the Bible; human origins according to scientific data collected from the world; fossil confusion; Adam or apes; and lastly purposeful design.

As far as youth are concerned, the issue quickly becomes cloudy with all sorts of competing claims from the secular world. Dr. Thomas presents the issues and provides answers to the secular claims. What, for example, is a young person to think about claims of transitional fossils, accounts of cultures said to be tens of thousands of years old and ancient kingdoms, claims about genetic variation that might require long ages to achieve.

This new title from Institute for Creation Research, provides excellent introductions to these topics. The format of the discussion is in ICR’s popular “Guide to” series, a 2-page spread for each issue complete with text and suitable eye-catching illustrations. Some of the discussion may be a little overwhelming for junior high (like alleles), but this exposure provides a foundation for when the student again encounters these terms.

The Bible clearly describes our history and the earth as young. Christians therefore wonder if our society is wrong when they declare that the earth is billions of years old.
